New Law Could Make Landlords Liable For Sex Trafficking At Their Rentals

New legislation in Prince George’s County aims to hold landlords and property managers accountable for prostitution and human trafficking at their rental properties — the latest sign of a growing concern in an immigrant-rich corner of the Washington suburb.

County Council member Deni Taveras (D-Adelphi) proposed the bill after receiving complaints from several Langley Park-area mothers, who said units in their apartment buildings were being used as brothels and the property managers knew about it.

Human Trafficking Rring Unearthed In Genesee County

The Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says it's one of the worst cases of human trafficking he's ever see.

Four women, allegedly kidnapped and violently forced into prostitution by Flint brothers Darryl Allen Miller and Chavez Lee Miller.

"All four of the victims alleged that Darryl and Chavez Miller induced, persuaded, encouraged, the women to become prostitutes through their acts of violence against them," Leyton said. "Beating them, choking them, stunning them, stabbing them with needles, and paying them with drugs."

Just 21, human-trafficking survivor Alyssa Beck has lived a life most cannot imagine

Alyssa Beck has love and hope on her hands. She’s not particularly fond of the tattoos, which she got in the Duval County jail along with the cross on her cheek.

“Hope was originally hate,” the 21-year-old said. “I changed it because there were people in my life who showed me hope.”

People in Beck’s young life — hateful people — once used drugs and violence to drag her into an abyss of unspeakable horrors. A victim of human trafficking by the time she was 15, Beck was twice held prisoner by men who forced her into prostitution. She was raped more times than she could count.

More Than Massages: A Hidden Sex Industry In Hampton Roads

A woman cried in front of a Chesapeake judge this spring.

A Mandarin interpreter was whispering in her ear, translating as a prosecutor described her crime.
It happened at a massage parlor, in an ordinary strip mall, tucked between a hair salon and a mortgage broker.

Fuzhen Zhao, 53, showed an undercover officer to a room.

He undressed.

During the massage, she crossed a line, making it obvious something illegal was on the menu.

“Not today,” the officer said, shaking his head.

Sex Trafficking 'Staggering' In Illegal Latin American Gold Mines: Researchers

Wed Mar 30, 2016 12:49pm EDT

BOGOTA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The scale of sex trafficking around illegal gold mines in parts of Latin America is "staggering," and thousands of people working there are prey to labor exploitation by organized crime groups, a think-tank said on Wednesday.

"When these mines are directly controlled by criminal groups, or in areas controlled by organized crime, there is an elevated risk of human trafficking," the report by the Geneva-based organization said.

"In Colombia and Peru particularly, and to a lesser extent in the other countries studied, our research uncovered numerous instances of labor trafficking and exploitation, sex trafficking and child labor."
